Movie Review – Son of Sardar

Completely Punjabi origin movies have a big impact in Bollywood from last few years. Akshay Kumar in Singh is King, Salman Khan in Heroes, Ranbir Kapoor in Rocket Singh, Sunny Deol in Yamla Pagla Deewana and so many other lead actors have done role of Sardar in the recent past. Well Ajay Devgn is doing it for the second time, before SOS he did it in Legend of Bhagat Singh.

Son of Sardar was one of the much awaited movies, especially in north India. SOS was much awaited not just because of Ajay Devgn playing a role of Sardar but also because the complete movie is based on Punjabi culture and also shot in Punjab itself. With Ajay Devgn, other actors like Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Juhi Chawla, Mukul Dev, Vindu Dara Singh, all are playing Punjabis in the movie. So that makes it must watch for everyone in north India, especially in Punjab.

From its promos, Son of Sardar indicated that it’s going to be a comedy all the way and actually it is. But comic story is well supported by high class action sequences. Son of Sardar has got most of the required things for an entertaining package like comedy, action, romance and emotions. Between comedy and action, the romantic story has been managed very well. Although it has been a remake of a Telegu movie Maryada Ramanna, but its screenplay and dialogs make it very much different and entertaining too. Son of Sardar may be Punjabi look alike Hindi movie but its action sequences remain Telugu, South Indian style.

The story of two enemy families move ahead when Jassi (Ajay Devgn) returns from London regarding his family property and in Punjab, Billu (Sanjay Dutt) is waiting for him to complete his revenge. Billu’s brother was killed by Jassi’s father and now Billu wants to kill Jassi to finish the complete Randhawa family. While his return to Punjab, Jassi meets Sukhmeet (Sonakshi) in the train, who happens to be the niece of Billu, and their attraction towards each other starts from there onwards. Somehow Jassi reaches Billu’s home but they can’t kill him because as per their tradition their guest is their God. Now they want Jassi to come out of their home and Jassi doesn’t want to go out, that makes the condition very funny and interesting to watch.

Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt’s chemistry is significant to watch in the movie and Sonakshi, like Dabangg and Rowdy Rathore, did an astonishing job again. Vindu Dara Singh and Mukul Dev add so much to make it really hilarious. Salman Khan’s guest appearance for an action scene and for a song at the end, adds a lot of value in it. After a long time, we get to see Tanuja in Son of Sardar, who as earlier, leaves a lot of impression with her character of Sanjay Dutt’s mother.

Director Ashwani Dhir has been magical with his direction in Son of Sardar. He has done a splendid job with shot making and delivered some extra ordinary sequences. Screenplay and dialogs deserve so much of appreciation which makes the movie interested all the way. The Punjabi tadka music wins so many hearts with songs like ‘Rani Tu Main Raja’, ‘Bichhdan’, ‘Salman Khan featured Po-Po’ and the title song ‘Son of Sardar’.

All in all, Son of Sardar is a complete package of entertainment with Punjabi tadka. If you are looking for entertainment then Son of Sardar is the answer. You may not find a fresh story line up but screenplay, dialogs, direction and acting makes it a really fresh entertainer. So in the festive season, what else one can ask for.

From, Son of Sardar gets 4/5.
